Sudabeh Irandegani, a 34-year-old Baloch woman and mother of six, is facing the imminent threat of execution in Iranshahr prison, accused of premeditated murder.

According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, Sudabeh, who was arrested on October 28, 2022, has been sentenced to death by retribution. She is now at risk of the execution of this sentence.

A knowledgeable source has stated that Sudabeh did not actually commit the murder, but took responsibility for the crime to protect her child.

The incident occurred during a verbal altercation, when Sudabeh’s child got involved, resulting in the death of a five-year-old from the opposing side. To save her child, Sudabeh accepted the charge of murder.

The victim’s family has demanded 2 billion tomans in blood money (diyah), of which 800 million tomans have been paid so far. The remainder must be paid by October 28; otherwise, the execution will be carried out.

The official diyah rate in Iran for 2024 has been set by the judiciary at 1.2 billion tomans, but the victim’s family is demanding more than this amount.

This situation poses serious challenges for poor families who cannot afford to pay these sums, while the wealthy can avoid execution by paying the diyah.

If the full amount is not paid, Sudabeh Irandegani will face execution.
