Sara Jahani, a women’s rights activist suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS), remains imprisoned in Lakan Prison, Rasht, and despite her deteriorating health, she continues to be denied access to adequate medical care and transfer to medical facilities.
According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, recent reports indicate that Ms. Jahani has experienced muscle spasms and has fallen in prison due to the worsening of her illness and lack of medical attention.
This women’s rights activist was initially arrested on August 16, 2023, and was later released on bail. However, she was re-arrested on July 29, 2024, to serve her sentence in Lakan Prison, Rasht.
Ms. Jahani’s sentence, issued on charges of membership in a group and assembly and collusion with the intent to disrupt national security, was upheld on May 28, 2024.
In late June 2024, Ms. Jahani, along with ten other women’s rights activists in Gilan, was referred to the Execution of Sentences Branch of the Rasht Prosecutor’s Office.
Despite requests and follow-ups, Ms. Jahani’s sentence had been temporarily suspended due to her medical condition.
However, it appears that prison authorities and the judiciary continue to withhold appropriate medical services from this women’s rights activist.
The denial of adequate medical care to Sara Jahani in prison is a clear example of the violation of prisoners’ rights, particularly those who are ill, in Iran.
