Esmail Gerami, a labor and retirees’ activist, was arrested on Sunday, August 11, 2024, after appearing at Evin Prosecutor’s Office and was transferred to Evin Prison.
According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, Mr. Gerami was arrested after appearing at Branch 3 of the Evin Prosecutor’s Office.
Earlier, on August 7, 2024, security forces went his home, searched it, confiscated some of his personal belongings, and summoned him to Evin Prosecutor’s Office.
In July of this year, Mr. Gerami was sentenced to a fine by Branch 1027 of the Tehran Criminal Court Two. Additionally, in November 2023, he was arrested during a retirees’ gathering in Tehran and released after a few hours.
It is noteworthy that Esmail Gerami has a history of arrests and legal actions due to his labor activism.
The repeated arrests and summons of labor activists highlight the ongoing pressures on this group and the increasing restrictions on freedom of assembly and expression in Iran. This event has once again raised concerns about the human rights situation in Iran and the violation of workers’ rights.
