On Saturday, August 3, 2024, the death sentences of three prisoners named Javad Amiri, Naghi Ghorbani, and Reza Rostami were carried out in Shiraz Central Prison. These three prisoners had previously been sentenced to death on charges of drug trafficking.
According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, Javad Amiri, 35, and Naghi Ghorbani, around 40, both from Bandar Abbas, were arrested about three years ago in a joint case for drug trafficking and sentenced to death.
Reza Rostami, 32, from the Sahleabad region of Shiraz, was also arrested about four years ago on the same charge and sentenced to death.
A few days before their execution, these three prisoners were transferred from Pirbanoo Prison in Shiraz to the central prison in this city.
An informed source told the Iranian Human Rights Organization that Pirbanoo Prison is mainly dedicated to drug offenders, many of whom are sentenced to death.
It is worth noting that the execution of these three prisoners has not been announced by Iranian internal media or official sources at the time of this report.
Reports indicate that the number of executions carried out for drug-related offenses has sharply increased in recent years. In 2023, this statistic showed an increase of about 84 percent compared to 2022.
