Forugh Samiei Nia, a prominent women’s rights activist in Iran, has been sentenced to imprisonment by the Revolutionary Court of Rasht on charges of “assembly and collusion” and “membership in a group.”
According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, Samiei Nia, who has a two-decade history of activism in the field of women’s rights, was previously arrested on August 16, 2023, along with 11 other women activists.
After spending 47 days in detention at Lakan Prison in Rasht, she was released on October 1, 2023.
The punitive imprisonment sentence for Samiei Nia includes three years, six months, and one day for the charge of “assembly and collusion,” and two years, seven months, and sixteen days for the charge of “membership in a group.”
The sentencing of Forugh Samiei Nia comes at a time when heavy sentences have been issued for other women activists in Iran in recent months. These sentences are viewed as an attempt by authorities to suppress the civil and political activities of women in Iran.
