Sepideh Ghalyan, a civil activist imprisoned in Evin Prison, has gone on a hunger strike in protest against her exile to Evin Prison and the failure to transfer her to the prison in her hometown of Ahvaz.
According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, Ms. Ghalyan began her hunger strike on Wednesday April 3rd, 2024. She was previously arrested on March 15th, 2023, on her way from Tehran to Dezful by security forces following her release due to the issuance of an amnesty decree. She was then transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison.
She was eventually moved to the women’s ward of Evin Prison and in April 2023, she was sentenced to two years of imprisonment by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court on charges of “insulting the leadership,” taking into account her previous detention days.
Ms. Ghalyan was also banned from joining political and social groups, using smartphones, and residing in Tehran and neighboring provinces for two years.
This verdict was upheld in July of the same year by Branch 36 of the Tehran Provincial Court.
Ms. Ghalyan faced a new lawsuit filed by Ameneh Sadat Zabihpour, an interrogator and reporter of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, and in August of last year, a closed-door trial was held at Branch 1207 of the Kachoui Tehran Judicial Complex.
Finally, in September 2023, Ms. Ghalyan was sentenced to one year and three months of imprisonment for the mentioned case.
This civil activist has previously been detained and sentenced due to her civil activities.
