Hossein Jalali, a prisoner held at Karaj’s Ghezel Hesar Prison who had previously been sentenced to 25 years in prison on charges related to “narcotics,” committed suicide by swallowing pills and lost his life.
According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, on Monday, February 26, 2024, an inmate named Hossein Jalali committed suicide at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj. He had been serving his sentence in this prison for the past seven months.
Jalali, who had been sentenced to 25 years in prison for drug-related crimes, had spent approximately seven months of his sentence in Unit One of this prison.
A source close to Jalali’s family confirmed the news, stating, “Hossein committed suicide by swallowing pills and lost his life.”

This news once again draws attention to the inadequate conditions of prisons and the numerous problems faced by inmates in Iran. Lack of welfare and hygiene facilities, lack of access to psychological services and counseling, as well as overcrowding in prisons, are among the factors that can lead to such tragedies.
The tragic death of Hossein Jalali once again underscores the urgent need to address the situation of prisons and prisoners in Iran.
This is the second inmate to commit suicide in Iranian prisons in the past week. Shahin Galhedari, a political prisoner imprisoned in Urmia Prison, aged about 46 and a resident of Urmia, committed suicide in Urmia Prison on the evening of Sunday, February 25th, 2024 and tragically ending his life.
