Navid Afkari, one of the detainees of the nationwide protests in August 2018, imprisoned in Shiraz Prison, was executed this morning, Saturday, September 12th, 2020.
Navid Afkari’s lawyer, Hossein Younesi, announced on his personal Twitter page: “The Shiraz judiciary has informed Navid Afkari’s family that the dead sentence has been carried out this morning.”
According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, Navid Afkari, one of the detainees of the August 2018 nationwide protests, who was sentenced to 2 death sentences, 6 years and 6 months imprisonment and 74 lashes by the Revolutionary Court and Shiraz Criminal Court, was executed in Shiraz prison on Saturday, September 12th, 2020.
On Monday, August 31st, 2020, Navid Afkari released an audio file denying the allegations and referring to his unfair trial and innocence, and appealed to the people of Iran and the world for help.
Navid Afkari, along with his other two brothers, Vahid and Habib, were arrested during the nationwide protests in August 2018, and were sentenced to death, imprisonment, and flogging by the Shiraz Revolutionary and Criminal Court in separate trials.
Navid Afkari Sangari has been sentenced to two death sentences, 6 years and 6 months in prison, and 74 lashes for the murder of Hassan Turkman, a security guard at the ABFA Shiraz office.
Afkari Sangari brothers sentenced to 2 death sentences, 88 years imprisonment and 222 lashes in separate trials by the Revolutionary Court and Shiraz Criminal Court on charges of “forming a group”, “killing a security force”, “participating in protests” and other charges.
According to the verdict, Navid (Farshid) Afkari was sentenced to 2 death sentences, 6 years and 6 months imprisonment and 74 lashes, Vahid Afkari to 54 years and 6 months imprisonment and 74 lashes and Habib Afkari to 27 years and 3 months imprisonment and 74 lashes.
The accusations against the Afkari Sangari brothers include “corruption through the formation and management of a group of four dissidents with the intention of disrupting the security of the country” and the murder of a Basij member named Hassan Turkman.
According to reports, Navid and Vahid Afkari were arrested on Monday, September 17th, 2018 and Habib Afkari on Thursday, December 13th, 2018.
Reports indicate that Navid and Vahid Afkari were severely beaten at the Shiraz Intelligence Office to obtaining forced confessions.
The case of Navid and Vahid Afkari’s cases were pending in the 1st and 2nd Criminal Courts of Fars Province, with the presence of a government assigned lawyer.
Habib Afkari’s case is being heard in the Revolutionary Court of Shiraz on the charge of attribution without the presence of a lawyer.
Navid (Farshid) Afkari, born in 1993, single, a plasterer and a wrestler (with several national championship medals.
The verdicts against the Afkari brothers have been upheld by the Supreme Court, and in recent days, prisoners and their lawyers have been notified.
