Leila Mirghafari, a civil activist who in June 2018, after appearing before Tehran’s Revolutionary Court branch 36, was arrested and sent to prison on charges of “insulting the leadership”, was released yesterday July 23rd, 2018, on bail.

According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, Leila (Khadijeh) Mirghafari, a civil activist and protester to the forced hijab, was detained on June 13th, 2018, after attending Tehran’s Revolutionary Court Branch 36 on charges of “insulting the leadership”. Yesterday July 23rd, 2018, she was released from the city of Rey prison on 80 million Toman bail.

The charges filed against Mrs. Mirghafari were “Disobeying the Protective Officers”, “Insulting the Leader”, “Appearing in the Public without Religious Hijab” ” Encouraging People to Prostitution and Corruption and Encouraging their Propaganda”.

It should be noted that last February, Ms. Mirghafari, stood on electric plantroom and removed her headscarves and held up a sign reading stop violence against women.

Security forces, while arresting her, beaten her which caused injury to her feet.

At the same time as the January protests, a number of protest women and girls challenged the veil, symbolically responding to these laws by removing their headscarves.

These girls and women were named “Girls of Revolution Street” because of their symbolic move started from Tehran Revolutionary Street (Khiaban Enghelab).

Many of these women and girls were arrested by security forces and police officers. Some of these arrests combined with violent and beatings, and human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have been criticizing the security forces encounter with the Girls of Revolution Street.
