Today April 4th, 2018, Ronak Aghaei from Mahabad, who was sentenced to 6 months in jail on charges of raising the Kurdistan flag and taking part in street celebrations linked to the Kurdish’s referendum, appeared at the Mahabad prison to serve her imprisonment sentence/time.
According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, On Wednesday, April 4th, 2018, Ronak Aghaei, a Kurdish citizen from Mahabad who was convicted of raising the Kurdistan flag and taking part in street celebrations linked to the Kurdish’s referendum, and was sentenced to 6 months in prison, has been transferred to Mahabad Prison to serve her sentence.
Ronak Aghaei, 45, was arrested on Monday, September 25, 2017, along with her daughter Sarvi Mosazadeh on charges of raising the Kurdistan flag in Mahabad. Her daughter was temporarily released after interrogation the same night, and after two weeks of interrogation, Ronak Aghaei was temporarily released on bail of 200 million tomans.
According to some reports, Ronak Aghaei was previously sentenced to five years in prison for allegedly cooperating with Kurdish opposition parties.
In support of the referendum on Kurdistan Region independence, several Kurdish citizens were arrested by security forces.
