Iran Supreme Court has overturned the death sentence of Abbas (Mojahed) Korkor, a political prisoner held in Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz. The case has been sent to a parallel court branch for a retrial.
According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, a source close to Korkor’s family reported: “Mojahed Korkor’s lawyers had separately filed requests for a retrial and invoked Article 477. Following the acceptance of these requests, the Supreme Court reviewed the case again and ultimately cancelled the death sentence.”
In April 2023, Korkor was originally sentenced to death by the First Branch of the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court on charges of “moharebeh” (waging war against God) and “corruption on earth.”
The sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court in January 2024, and the case was subsequently forwarded to the Izeh Court’s Execution of Sentences Branch.
The Iranian Judiciary had accused Korkor of involvement in the killing of Kian Pirfalak, a 9-year-old boy who was shot and killed during an incident in Izeh on November 16, 2022. Security forces allegedly fired at civilians during the event.
The family of Kian Pirfalak has consistently rejected the Judiciary’s claims. Kian’s mother stated: “As we were returning home, security forces opened fire on our vehicle.”
The Revolutionary Court also charged Korkor with “disrupting public order, causing major harm leading to the deaths of seven people, including Kian Pirfalak, significant damage to public and private property, forming anti-regime groups, and participating in armed rebellion against the Islamic Republic.”
