Abdollah Qanbarivand and Mahmoud Qanbarivand, residents of Piranshahr and detainees from the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, who had previously been sentenced to imprisonment and other penalties, were arrested and sent to prison to serve their sentences.
According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, Abdollah Qanbarivand, 51, and Mahmoud Qanbarivand, 48, two disabled brothers from Piranshahr and political activists, were arrested on Saturday, September 7, 2024, to serve their six-year and seven-month sentences and were transferred to the Central Prison of Naqadeh.
These two brothers, who suffer from chronic illnesses, had previously been convicted of membership in the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan and actions against national security. The initial charge against them, which included the fabrication of Molotov cocktails and homemade weapons, was dismissed due to insufficient evidence, but they were ultimately convicted of other charges.
Their sentence was issued and communicated to them on May 14, 2023. According to the ruling, Abdollah Qanbarivand was convicted for participating in the fabrication of Molotov cocktails, and Mahmoud Qanbarivand was convicted for fabricating homemade weapons and possessing ammunition.
The two brothers were arrested in December 2022 and, after enduring severe torture, were temporarily released on heavy bail. Mahmoud Qanbarivand was hospitalized a few days before his transfer to prison due to a severe infection at the site of his right leg amputation.
The enforcement of the prison sentence for these two disabled brothers comes despite their chronic illnesses and the torture they endured during their interrogation period. This incident once again raises concerns about the situation of political prisoners and human rights violations in Iran.
